'Sorisae' faces a crisis of being unable to broadcast due to a 1-minute error in the previous episode
Folk legend Hwang Young-ik confesses the hidden stories behind 'You and I' and his battle with cardiac arrhythmia. He also announced that he will be holding a solo concert in November.
A 1-Minute Intro: The Untold Story of a National Masterpiece That Almost Vanished Due to PDs' Misunderstanding
The mega-hit "You and I" by 'Sorisae,' which drove a folk music craze in South Korea in the late 1980s, actually faced a crisis where it almost disappeared from broadcasting stations. Folk singer Hwang Young-ik, appearing on KBS 1TV's 'Songumentary Back to the Music Season 2' at 11:05 PM on the 11th, will personally reveal the unexpected behind-the-scenes story.
At the time, the song had an intro lasting a whopping one minute and featured a unique composition with two modulations in the middle. Because of this, broadcasting PDs at the time misunderstood the song as 'instrumental music' rather than a popular song. Despite continuous pressure to significantly shorten the song's length, Hwang Young-ik met with composer Kim Ki-pyo to undergo the arrangement process once more. As a result, the current classic and highly polished masterpiece was born, leading to its widespread national love.
Hwang Young-ik's musical life began in sorrow. After losing his father during his high school years, he first picked up the guitar with the sole desire to comfort his mother, who had fallen into deep grief. He faced trials, such as failing an audition at a restaurant in Incheon, but through the tenacity of visiting stages every day without giving up, he met the late Han Jeong-seon and was able to form the 'Solgae Trio.' He subsequently emerged as a symbol of youth culture in the 80s by hitting it big with songs like "In the Middle of a Play" and "Woman."
Facing the Brink of Death Due to Cardiac Arrhythmia, and a Second Life
Even for Hwang Young-ik, who was walking a smooth path, an unexpected health crisis arrived. In 2011, due to accumulated extreme stress and fatigue, he had to visit the emergency room three times in a single day. Ultimately, he received the shocking diagnosis of 'cardiac arrhythmia.' Although he faced a major crisis while experiencing the brink of death, he instead used this period of battling illness as a precious turning point to reflect on his body and design his second life.
After overcoming his illness, he officially began his third musical journey in 2013 by releasing his first solo album, 32 years after his debut. Currently, he communicates directly with fans through his YouTube channel 'Sorisae Hwang Young-ik TV.' He demonstrates his enduring prowess by performing a vast number of over 200–300 requested songs live.
45th Anniversary: Plans for a Solo Concert in November and New Song Release
Celebrating his 45th anniversary since debut this year, Hwang Young-ik announced specific activity plans for his fans. He will hold a solo concert this coming November. Additionally, he is preparing to release a new song in the second half of 2026.
On this broadcast, he will perform live songs that contain his life story, including "You and I," as well as "Woman," "Deciding to Love," "On the Day the Flowers Bloom," and "Walking," alongside co-hosts So Chan-whee and Shin Yu. Music critic Lim Jin-mo praised Hwang Young-ik, calling him a great musician who has vividly kept the two legendary names, 'Solgae Trio' and 'Sorisae,' alive to this day through a continuity that transcends generations rather than staying confined to the popularity of a single era.
