Portal-centered news consumption threatens media editorial rights
We examine the issues of infringement on news agencies' editorial rights and the distortion of the news ecosystem caused by dependence on portals.
The Crisis of the Press Caused by Portal Dependency
As the Korean news consumption environment becomes excessively dependent on portal sites, the editorial rights, which are the inherent authority of news organizations, are being threatened. This is because a distorted structure has become entrenched, where the exposure of articles is determined by portal algorithms and news placement methods rather than news organizations arranging news based on their own value judgments. This phenomenon is resulting in the leadership of news production shifting from news organizations to portals.
Clickbait Competition and the Distortion of the News Ecosystem
As news leadership shifts to portals, news organizations are suffering from the side effect of focusing on producing sensationalist articles to induce clicks within portals rather than creating independent news value. As the fundamental function of news organizations to arrange and edit news weakens, the qualitative degradation and distortion of the overall news ecosystem are intensifying.
Loss of Diversity and Information Concentration
As readers rely solely on the news arrangements provided by portals, opportunities to encounter news from diverse perspectives decrease, and a phenomenon of being buried in specific issues emerges. This is a major cause that hinders the role of public opinion formation, a public function of the press, and harms the diversity of news consumption. Despite the existence of various planned contents operated by news organizations, such as 'News Banana', 'Trend Diary: Reading MZ', and 'News Focus', the portal-centered consumption structure has structural limitations that restrict the accessibility of these in-depth planned works.
Exposure Constraints on Locally-Focused Content
News organizations strive to cover a wide range of fields, including politics, economy, society, and culture, to provide locally-focused information. They maintain a broad spectrum, from specialized planning for the Daejeon/Chungcheong region in administration, economy, and culture, to social planning like 'Unsolved Cases, Into the Memories of That Day', and even lifestyle-oriented content. However, the portal-centered distribution structure acts as a factor that blocks or restricts the paths through which these professional and multifaceted planned articles are delivered to readers.
Structural Changes for the Recovery of Press Autonomy
Fundamental measures are needed to improve the news distribution structure dependent on portals and to protect the editorial rights of news organizations. Creating an ecosystem where the press can maintain independent reporting capabilities without being swayed by portal algorithms is emerging as an urgent task.
