'Gag Concert' Stars Raid Samsung Girls' High School Auditorium, Filling it with Laughter
On the 10th, the auditorium of Samsung Girls' High School in Saha-gu, Busan, was filled with the cheers of students. This was due to 'Comedy School Attack,' a pre-event program prepared by the 14th Busan International Comedy Festival (BICF), which is set to open on August 21. Leaving the performance venues to visit schools directly, the comedians showcased the essence of field-style comedy by making eye contact with the students.
The stars on stage were Kim Byung-wook, Chae Hyo-ryeong, Kang Myung-sun, and Seo Seong-gyeong, who are active in KBS's 'Gag Concert.' They began with 'What Should I Say?', a talk-based skit that interacts with the audience in real-time, and followed it with reconfigured versions of their popular existing segments such as 'Simgok Police Station' and 'The Military.' As the comedians' witty remarks and ad-libs, which immediately reflected the students' reactions, continued, bursts of laughter and applause erupted throughout the auditorium.
It was not merely a performance to watch. Students climbed onto the stage to mingle with the comedians. Participatory programs such as 'Look into my eyes! Dynamic Visual Acuity Test' and 'What is your name?' were held, and the festive atmosphere was heightened with games where teachers and students guessed songs together and short-form challenge relays. At the end of the event, special memories were gifted by presenting 'Laughter Scholarships' to the students who provided the most laughter on site.
Cheering Videos from Kim Jun-ho and Hong In-gyu, and Enthusiastic Response from Students
In addition to the comedians, cheering messages from key figures leading the festival were also delivered on-site. Executive Director Kim Jun-ho sent a friendly greeting through a video message, saying, "Students of Samsung Girls' High School, a prestigious private school in Busan, it's so good to see you!" He then encouraged the students to relieve their stress, saying, "I hope you are ready to laugh to your heart's content today." He also requested much interest and participation in the 14th Busan International Comedy Festival, which will be held in Busan from August 21 to 30.
Hong In-gyu, Chief of External Cooperation, also added strength through a video. He expressed, "I hope the students' stress flies away through the School Attack," and asked for love for the main festival to be held in August. Students joined the warm-up process for the festival by sending enthusiastic cheers to the figures appearing in the videos and the comedians' performances.
The Meaning of 'Comedy School Attack' in Lowering the Festival's Threshold
'Comedy School Attack' has established itself as a representative pre-program of the Busan International Comedy Festival. It was designed to provide teenagers with the opportunity to experience the genre of comedy directly and to approach citizens more closely beyond the physical space of performance venues. Every year, it has played a role in lowering the threshold of the festival by visiting school sites directly and sharing laughter with students.
An official from the Busan International Comedy Festival Organizing Committee stated that they reaffirmed the power of laughter while watching the students on-site. The organizing committee plans to continue developing various programs that can meet citizens at a closer distance, striving to spread comedy culture and expand opportunities for cultural enjoyment. This event is deeply meaningful in that it went beyond a simple one-time visit and delivered the popular value of comedy to teenagers.
BICF's Vision Toward Becoming Asia's Representative Comedy Hub
Now in its 14th year, the Busan International Comedy Festival has grown into Korea's first and Asia's largest international comedy festival. This festival, held throughout Busan from August 21 to 30, will feature various performances and programs with the participation of diverse comedy artists from home and abroad.
The goal of the organizing committee is not merely to remain a one-time festival. The core is to build a comedy platform (dedicated theaters) where performances, creation, and education are organically connected. Through this, they plan to steadily discover and nurture new comedians and professional talent, and create a sustainable ecosystem that covers the entire process from planning and production to distribution of comedy content. They are drawing a concrete blueprint to leap forward as a comedy hub representing Asia.
Comedians and Students Syncing on Stage
Kim Byung-wook, Chae Hyo-ryeong, Kang Myung-sun, and Seo Seong-gyeong, the main stars of KBS 'Gag Concert 2,' stood at the center of the stage. They interacted with students by performing popular segments such as 'Simgok Police Station' and 'The Military,' as well as the audience-participatory talk skit 'What Should I Say?'
Students and teachers also actively participated in the program. They decorated the stage with the comedians through song-guessing games and short-form challenge relays. Laughter scholarships were presented to the students who burst into the loudest laughter on-site.
