Mirage, a tearful confession made three months after his mother's passing
Mirage shared her longing for her mother and her regrets for being a blunt daughter on 'Malja Show'.
"I thought I had plenty of time" The weight of loss faced by Shin Gi-ru
Comedian Shin Gi-ru has candidly shared her feelings after losing her mother. Appearing on KBS 2TV's 'Malja Show' aired on the 13th, Shin Gi-ru burst into tears while remembering her mother, who passed away in March at the age of 68. It has been just over three months since her mother's passing.
Shin Gi-ru did not hide her regrets as a blunt daughter. She expressed her feelings at the time, saying, "I didn't know Mom would leave so soon. I thought I had plenty of time." Her guilt over not being able to express affection to her closest person led to tears. Shin Gi-ru recalled herself as "a daughter who was not affectionate, but blunt and indifferent."
Even amidst the sadness, there were moments when she confirmed her mother's love. Shin Gi-ru mentioned stories told to her by mourners who visited the funeral hall. They said that during her lifetime, her mother never hesitated to brag about Shin Gi-ru's success. Shin Gi-ru choked up again, swallowing her grief, feeling relieved that her mother seemed to have left after witnessing her success.
"The words 'you'll be okay later' were more comforting than 'cheer up'"
In the midst of the pain of loss, what gave strength to Shin Gi-ru was not the encouragement to 'cheer up right now.' She revealed that a single remark from a funeral director she met at the funeral hall resonated deeply with her. At the time, the funeral director told her, "It feels like you can't handle it at all right now, but after some time passes, you'll be okay."
Shin Gi-ru explained that those words, which pointed to her state after time had passed, were much more touching than the common phrase "cheer up." She meant that although she was too distraught to even process the words at the time, that sincere prediction provided comfort even now as time has passed.
In this broadcast, a story was also introduced from an audience member who is a funeral director, expressing a desire to comfort the bereaved. This audience member, who experienced losing her father at a young age seven years ago, confessed that she wanted to find warm words to offer to the chief mourners. In response, 'Malja Grandma' Kim Young-hee replied, "The mourners will subtly feel that you are weeping with them in your heart," adding that even if she doesn't force herself to speak, the timing will come when her sincerity is conveyed.
The "Mother living in my heart" shared by a funeral director audience member
When Shin Gi-ru expressed her feelings of helplessness, saying, "I don't know when I'll be okay, or if I will ever truly be okay," a funeral director in the audience offered direct comfort. The advice from an expert who had experienced the pain of loss soothed Shin Gi-ru's heart.
The audience member said, "Rather than thinking your mother is not by your side, think of her as being in your heart, and live your life diligently with that heart." It was advice to accept her mother's absence as a presence in her heart rather than perceiving it as physical distance.
Meanwhile, in this broadcast, the owner of a regular pancake restaurant visited the studio to look after Shin Gi-ru's appetite. Worried that Shin Gi-ru's delivery orders had become infrequent, the owner brought homemade 'donggeurang-ttaeng' (meatballs) as a gift. The owner showed sincerity, saying, "I prepared 'Shin Gi-ru pancakes' myself."
Shin Gi-ru welcomed the owner with a hug, but soon after seeing the gifted meatballs, she showed her appetite by saying, "Please give me the chopsticks quickly," turning the scene into a sea of laughter. The owner cleared up the misunderstanding after Shin Gi-ru confessed that she had reduced her orders out of guilt because the owner used to give so much extra service whenever she left her name on delivery orders.
The 'Shin Gi-ru pancakes' tasted by Kim Young-hee were a menu reflecting Shin Gi-ru's preference, containing no vegetables at all. Kim Young-hee marveled at the composition which had no vegetables whatsoever. KBS 2TV's 'Malja Show' airs every Monday at 9:30 PM.
