EXID's Elly reveals the untold story behind 'Jjanhae'... "It was originally a Fiestar song we took"

EXID member and songwriter Elly has opened up about the intense moments during the group's past activities and the behind-the-scenes story of their song's creation. In a recent conversation on Cao Lu's YouTube channel, Elly shared vivid recollections of the period when EXID's signature hit "Up & Down" achieved a sudden surge in popularity, mentioning her emotions at the time and the existence of an unreleased guide version.

An intriguing story surrounding EXID's song "Jjanhae" has been revealed. Elly disclosed that the song was originally intended for Fiestar. She explained that the song was assigned to EXID following a decision by their agency, and she personally wrote the lyrics. Notably, the 2014 guide version includes choruses by Hani and Solji, and Elly added that she still possesses that guide recording.

Explaining the difference in the guide version, Elly remarked, "Even with the same song, the feeling changes depending on whose voice it is." The guide recorded at the time included Hani's chorus, offering a glimpse into the members' efforts to enhance the song's quality. "Since I wrote the lyrics, I also feel a sense of guilt," Elly admitted, candidly sharing the process of how the song came to be theirs.

The miracle of "Up & Down's" resurgence amidst the threat of disbandment

During the sudden resurgence of "Up & Down," which marked a milestone in K-pop history, EXID was actually facing the threat of disbandment. Recalling the situation, Elly confessed, "After our promotions ended, the company didn't seem to want to release our next album. It was such a difficult time that I even thought we might disband." The members' struggles, including being unable to go home due to a lack of fan support, continued until the resurgence began.

However, the surge triggered by a viral fancam changed the team's destiny. "It didn't feel real that our ranking was suddenly rising," Elly said, recalling how the members checked the charts every day like children until they finally hit number one. Since returning to music shows and taking first place after promotions had already concluded was unprecedented, the sense of achievement was even more special.

Elly also spoke about the changes following the resurgence. "I had a strong desire to do even better on the next album," she said, noting that as their event schedules increased drastically, she maintained her professionalism by requesting her manager to touch up her makeup right before a stage, no matter how exhausted she was.
