DJI SDR Transmission 2 Links Up to Eight Receivers and Reaches 4km Outdoors, With No Fixed Transmitter or Receiver

Reviewed by the YouTube channel Shindongdengdong, DJI SDR Transmission 2 is a 4K wireless video system whose units can switch between transmitter and receiver roles. It supports 4K 60fps, up to eight receivers and an outdoor range of 4km, but drops Wi-Fi mode and the built-in SDI port.

DJI SDR Transmission 2 can send one transmitter's video signal to as many as eight receivers, with an outdoor transmission range extended to 4km. According to the YouTube channel Shindongdengdong, a small switch on the side of each unit now sets it as either transmitter or receiver, so the two roles are no longer separate products.

Built for the cluttered wireless studio

The problem it targets is familiar on a studio set: the person behind the camera has to check the lighting and how their own face looks on screen in real time. Shindongdengdong presented the DJI SDR Transmission 2 as a 4K wireless video transmission system designed to remove that frustration.

On stability, the channel reported that the connection held without dropouts or picture breakup, even though the video is 4K and the studio's wireless environment is complicated. The auto channel function, which resolves channel interference, was singled out as impressive. Because one transmitter can feed up to eight receivers, the director, camera operator and lighting staff can each watch the image on their own monitor.

From transmitter-receiver split to a single flexible unit

The predecessor had clearly separate units: a transmitter that attached to the camera and a receiver that connected to the monitor, and the two could not be mixed up. Now the role switch means users can buy as many units as they need and combine them to suit the situation, for example one transmitter feeding several receivers.

Image quality also takes a big step. The earlier model topped out at 1080p, while this one supports 4K 60fps and 10-bit HDR, about 2.5 times the transmitted data of its predecessor. Shindongdengdong said that where the previous model only allowed a rough check of framing, 4K monitoring now lets users judge slightly missed focus with their own eyes, using a focus peaking tool.

A smaller body, with expansion where needed

The design philosophy can be summed up as a small main unit that expands only when needed. The body weighs 136g, down from 145g, and is thinner, so in the hand it feels about a cup smaller. Its terminals are one HDMI and one USB-C, and power comes through USB-C or an MPF battery. Shindongdengdong said it is small and light enough to mount alongside a camera with little setup burden. Users who need an SDI terminal or extra USB-C ports can add a separately offered expansion board and cage. With the board attached, an SDI terminal appears and the USB-C ports increase to three. That allows a light body alone on the camera and a board-equipped unit on the monitor side, where terminals are plentiful.

Shindongdengdong used this to show a mobile monitor stand setup for studios. A battery-powered transmitter unit sits on the camera or tripod, while a receiver with the expansion board is placed on the stand, feeding a large monitor or serving as a solo monitor during narration shooting. In a studio full of wireless signals from microphones and lights, the auto channel function moved to a new channel whenever another device overlapped, and the channel confirmed the connection stayed stable and uninterrupted. An Osmo Pocket can also be connected directly to the transmitter by USB-C for a live setup that receives a 4K picture.

Trade-offs, and extras for small crews

Some things changed for the worse. The Wi-Fi mode of the previous model has been removed, so wireless monitoring on a smartphone is no longer possible, and phones or tablets must be connected by cable. The SDI terminal that was built into the earlier body has also been dropped and is now available only by attaching the expansion board. The channel noted both as drawbacks for people who used the previous model.

Other features include a foldable antenna for easier transport and storage, and a small status window on the unit that shows connection and channel status at a glance. A scan-only function, with no pairing, switches to another camera within seconds, and DJI RS gimbals can be controlled through an app, which improves operating efficiency for small shooting teams.
