Actor Lee Joon and BOYNEXTDOOR member WOONHAK experienced the grueling work process of a technical profession at a wallpapering site. A video released by the YouTube channel Workman captures the overall flow of wallpapering work, including removing wallpaper, cutting, applying paste, and the actual process of attaching the wallpaper.
"Doing it with the determination to die": WOONHAK's challenge and first encounter with the wallpapering site
WOONHAK joined Lee Joon at the site. Mentioning past experiences such as working with boxes, WOONHAK expressed his determination to take on a technical job that includes rope work. He revealed his attitude toward the field work by mentioning his mindset on stage. The two met the operator of Gahan Dobaе, who has been working as a wallpaperer for five years, to begin the work in earnest. At the site, preliminary work was conducted to install lighting fixtures and fire detectors before removing the wallpaper. This was followed by the process of tearing off the existing wallpaper, during which it was noted that the difficulty of the work increases when multiple layers of wallpaper have been overlaid.
From wallpaper removal to aging rice paste: a process of skilled techniques
As the wallpaper removal progressed, professional processes of a technical job followed. The process of using a blade to draw straight lines to tear off the wallpaper and the process of adjusting level differences were introduced. In particular, the paste-making process, which is one of the core elements of wallpapering, drew attention. While paste was applied by hand in the past, a method of using a machine to mix paste and water is currently utilized. The paste used is "rice paste" made from rice, and it was explained on-site that it must be placed into wallpaper bags and "aged" for a certain period before use. Workers focused on maintaining the appropriate state by checking the concentration of the paste.
"It can be saved": the difficulty of attaching wallpaper and adjusting level differences
During the full-scale wallpaper attachment stage, techniques for folding and attaching the wallpaper were required. The process involved attaching the wallpaper in a straight line and then using a knife to tidy it up, or using the palms and the backs of the hands to press the wallpaper against the surface. During this process, situations occurred where the wallpaper became wrinkled or did not adhere properly. On-site, techniques were shared such as moving the wallpaper up and down to ensure it adheres without lifting, and using backing paper to create space to adjust the level differences of the wall surface. Lee Joon and WOONHAK experienced the detailed processes of wallpapering while undergoing trial and error during the folding and attaching stages.
