Pixar 'Gato', a black cat meets a mafia boss
Pixar's new film 'Gato' is set to be released in March 2027. It follows the story of Venice and a black cat named Nero.
Pixar's new feature animation 'Gatto' has revealed its first look ahead of its theatrical release on March 5, 2027. The protagonist is Nero, a black cat wandering through the canals of Venice. The main plot follows Nero, who forms an unexpected friendship after falling into debt with Rocco, a local cat mafia boss, leading him to question how he has lived his life. The combination of cats, Venice, and the mafia slightly twists the familiar tone of family animation.
The Italian colors revisited by the director of 'Luca'
'Gatto' is the new work from director Enrico Casarosa, who directed 'Luca.' While 'Luca' focused on the sunlight of an Italian coastal town and the friendship between boys, this time it adds the night of Venice, superstition, and the tension of narrow alleys. Even though it is the same Italy, the tone is different. Instead of the bright blue sea, the stage is set on narrow canals and dark rooftops, maintaining Casarosa's signature soft sensibility while moving the story toward a slightly more playful and dangerous direction.
The genre confirmed in the official production introduction is animation and adventure. Produced by Andrea Warren, the voice cast includes Mark Ruffalo and Laurence Fishburne. Mark Ruffalo is known to voice Nero, and Laurence Fishburne will play Rocco. As both actors have built strong presences in live-action acting, the key to this work lies in how well they can bring out Nero's anxiety and Rocco's intimidation through voice alone, just as much as the character design.
The teaser shows tension and laughter rather than just cuteness
The official teaser does not treat the black cat as merely adorable. A scene where a tuna thief is interrogated in a dark space begins like a feline crime drama. Rocco sets a cold atmosphere, and Nero tries to match it by acting serious. However, the moment a lit lightbulb swings, the cats quickly lose control of their instincts and chase the light. This short scene reveals the flavor 'Gatto' is aiming for: a way of maintaining a serious tone only to burst into laughter through the natural movements of cats.
The background of the poster and trailer is also important. Venice is a city where waterways appear before roads, and the narrow alleys, bridges, and night canals make the characters' choices seem even more significant. For Nero to escape the situation where he is tied to Rocco, a simple story of running away will not be enough. This is because the city itself can act as a device that blocks and shakes his path. Amidst Pixar's recent trend of pushing both familiar series and new stories, 'Gatto' stands on a test to see if an original feature can bring audiences back to theaters.
The next points to watch: more specific characters and release strategy
The core information released so far includes the release date, director, producer, main voice cast, and the relationship between Nero and Rocco. The rating has not yet been determined, and the release schedule for Korea has not been separately confirmed. What to look for in the next trailer is how Nero became entangled with Rocco and how convincingly the friendship between the two characters grows as the center of the actual story. If it appears only as a cute cat movie, it could quickly feel light. Conversely, if the sense of space in Venice and the voice acting of the actors drive Nero's choices, 'Gatto' has the potential to remain a Pixar original with a different face from 'Luca.'
