Toy Story 5 surpasses $800 million at the global box office
The animated film 'Toy Story 5' is on the verge of breaking the series record, with global earnings surpassing $800 million. It also ranked number one at the domestic box office.
'Toy Story 5' Surpasses $800 Million, Close to Breaking Series Record
The animated film 'Toy Story 5' continues its box office success worldwide. As of July 9 (local time), it has earned $381 million in North America and $427.3 million in overseas markets, recording a total global revenue of $808.6 million (approximately 1.22 trillion KRW).
The revenue trend is highly likely to surpass the record of its predecessor, 'Toy Story 4'. Released in 2019, 'Toy Story 4' earned $1.07 billion. This new installment set a series opening record by earning $160 million in its opening weekend alone, exceeding the previous record of $120 million held by 'Toy Story 4'.
With a production budget of $250 million, this film has already surpassed its break-even point of $400–$500 million through theatrical sales alone. Currently, the 2026 Hollywood box office rankings show 'Super Mario Galaxy' in 1st place ($1.09 billion), 'Michael' in 2nd place ($991 million), and 'Toy Story 5' in 3rd place.
Winning Back Children's Hearts Lost to Tablets, Returning After 7 Years
This new film is Pixar Animation Studios' 31st feature-length animation, presented seven years after 'Toy Story 4' in 2019. It follows the toys 'Woody', 'Buzz', and 'Jessie' as they struggle to win back the heart of 'Bonnie', a child whose interest has been captured by a smart tablet. It reflects the modern era where children spend time with electronic devices instead of toys.
Despite the third film implying the end of the series, fans have criticized the production of the fourth and fifth installments, suggesting that the series is being extended solely for profit, which lowers the quality of the works. Meanwhile, the 'Toy Story' series is a representative Disney/Pixar franchise that generates over $1 billion in annual revenue through various licensing businesses such as consumer goods, games, and publishing, in addition to films.
Domestic Box Office: 1st Place 'Toy Story 5' and 2nd Place 'The Eye'
'Toy Story 5' is also showing strong performance in the domestic market. It rose to 1st place in the domestic box office, recording 550,000 weekly viewers during the past week (July 3–9). The cumulative number of viewers is 2.34 million.
2nd place was taken by the suspense thriller 'The Eye', which was released on June 24. It recorded 540,000 weekly viewers and a cumulative total of 1.02 million viewers. A remake of the Spanish film 'Julia's Eyes', this work depicts the story of the protagonist Seo-jin, who is losing her sight due to a genetic disease, as she investigates suspicions surrounding the death of her twin brother.
Actress Shin Min-ah played a dual role as photographer Park Seo-jin, who is losing her sight due to hereditary optic neuropathy, and her mysterious deceased brother Park Seo-in. Actor Kim Nam-hee played Detective Lee Do-hyuk, who tracks Seo-in's death alongside Seo-jin. At the production press conference, Shin Min-ah stated, "Acting as a visually impaired person was physically challenging, and playing dual roles was emotionally difficult."
Disney Live-Action Remake 'Moana' Settles at 3rd Place Domestically
3rd place was taken by 'Moana', which was released on the 8th. Both weekly and cumulative viewers recorded 110,000. This is a live-action film based on the 2016 animated original, telling the story of a young girl named Moana who goes on an adventure with the demigod Maui. Dwayne Johnson, who provided the voice for 'Maui' in the animation, reprises the role in this film.
'Moana' is expected to earn approximately $130 million (about 195.7 billion KRW) during its first weekend of global release. This is the lowest level among Disney's live-action remakes. Previously, 'The Little Mermaid' recorded $186 million and 'Cinderella' recorded $132 million. 'Moana' has a Rotten Tomatoes freshness score of 36%. 4th place was taken by the film 'Colony', which was released on May 21 and has recorded 5.88 million cumulative viewers, with 110,000 weekly viewers.
