Yesung, KYUHYUN's face price story... Leeteuk's '4 AM underwear'

Super Junior's Leeteuk recalled the conflicts between members and the strict management style of their manager during their early debut days. In the video 'Super Junior Battle Ultimate Final Summary (ep.116 Leeteuk X Heechul)' released on the YouTube channel 'Jipdaeseong' on July 17, Leeteuk and Kim Heechul candidly shared episodes that occurred within the team in the past.

KYUHYUN's injury caused by an ice cream prank

At the time, there was a sudden incident between KYUHYUN and Yesung, who were part of the maknae line. While KYUHYUN was eating ice cream, Yesung asked for just one bite, but KYUHYUN teased him by making 'ebebebe' sounds. Unable to endure it, Yesung momentarily lost his temper and struck KYUHYUN's face, resulting in an injury where KYUHYUN's lip was split right before a live broadcast stage the next day. Kim Heechul mentioned the seriousness of the situation, saying, "It's really bad to injure your face when you have to go up on stage."

Immediately after the incident, Leeteuk, who was the leader, had to wake up Yesung so they could be scolded together to settle the situation. Leeteuk recalled, "Yesung looked at me and started crying because he felt bad. I told him it was okay." Kim Heechul continued the lighthearted atmosphere, noting that while KYUHYUN used to get hit for playing such pranks in the early days of debut, he has since grown into the 'Maknae on Top,' even going as far as calling out members who don't show up to performances on social media.

4:30 AM, the leader called out in his underwear

The embarrassing situation Leeteuk had to endure due to Yesung's actions was also revealed. Leeteuk stated, "That night, I was about to wash up and go to sleep when (the manager) told me to come out at 4:30 AM." At the time, Leeteuk was wearing only boxer shorts in the dorm, and he showed a pitiful sight to the manager while being hurriedly called out. Leeteuk recalled, "Maybe I looked pitiful, because (the manager) told me to at least put on pants." Ultimately, Leeteuk had to wake up Yesung and be scolded by the manager together.

Super Junior's management operated according to the strict disciplinary methods of the manager at the time. Leeteuk said, "Super Junior was a bit different from the SM style. After long trainee years, everyone was exhausted like defeated soldiers and had strong personalities." The manager in charge of the team at the time introduced military-style discipline for success and chose a method of giving collective punishment, holding the entire team responsible for one member's mistake. In this process, Leeteuk, as the leader, could not avoid responsibility, such as having to wake up Yesung to be scolded together.

Amidst this collectivist atmosphere, Kim Heechul showed a distinctly different attitude. Leeteuk revealed that in the past, when unfair discipline continued during practice and the manager asked, "Raise your hand if you think being scolded here is unfair," while other members kept their heads down, only Kim Heechul raised his hand high. Kim Heechul confessed, "I joined with a rock spirit from the beginning and had a strong individualistic tendency. I didn't understand why I had to be scolded when I hadn't done anything wrong." In fact, when a collective duck-walk punishment was ordered, he showed unexpected behavior by running one lap with them and then immediately escaping back to the dorm.
