The daily life of Inju and Brooke, a couple in their 8th year living in Arizona, United States, is filled with the bustle of a large family of nine members living together. The daily life shared by TVCHOSUN JOY captures a unique lifestyle where a Korean husband and an American wife met and formed a large family living locally in the United States.
"Are we dating?" A marriage promise that started like a joke
The connection between Inju and Brooke began at Arizona State University. At the time, Brooke, who was taking a Korean language class, approached Inju asking for help with homework, and their relationship began when Inju asked, "Are we dating?" while they were walking together after class. The "Let's get married" promise, exchanged like a joke during dates, led to an actual marriage.
Currently, a total of nine family members, including the parents-in-law, brother-in-law, and children, live under one roof. Last year, the couple sold the house where the parents-in-law and the brother-in-law lived and moved to a larger house, beginning their life as a large family. The spacious living room has become a common space where the whole family gathers to watch TV or play games, and the second floor is used as a playroom for the children. While the parents-in-law add convenience to life by helping with picking up the children and housework, Inju confessed that there are also aspects of having to be mindful because they live with the parents-in-law.
Morning scenes of nine family members and the weight of parenting
The morning in a house where nine people live together is busy. The daily routine, which requires frequent tidying of the living room, hallways, and kitchen, runs without a break as childcare and housework are intertwined. Brooke shared that she is happier now, with many family members living together, than when she was looking after the children alone. She explained that people around her also say she looks happier than before.
However, there are not few hardships as a mother responsible for a large family. Brooke expressed fatigue from childcare and housework, saying, "There is so much to do that I feel like I can never catch up." The process of the children getting ready for school and the bustling living room vividly show the vitality possessed by a large family.
Special Korean food for her husband, Kimchijeon and Noodles
Brooke prepares sincere Korean meals for her Korean husband. On days when her husband finishes hard work, she contemplates a special menu, and the menu for this day was Kimchijeon (kimchi pancake) and noodles. While preparing Kimchijeon and noodles for her husband, Brooke tries to boost his energy.
With many family members living together, the pantry filled with ingredients is a key space that shows the lived reality of this household. In the kitchen, which is responsible for the meals of the large family, various foods are made every day, and a dining table unique to them, where Korean and American cultures are mixed, is set.
