Oriental medical doctor Lee Gyeong-je reflects on sibling sacrifices

During a recent Dongchimi YouTube broadcast, Lee Gyeong-je shared how his younger brother supported his business for nearly two years by repeatedly withdrawing 2 million won from a 3 million won salary. Lee also expressed deep gratitude toward his eldest sister, whom he described as the navigation of his life for her role in raising him.

Amidst the common perception that sibling bonds often drift apart due to separate families and livelihoods, a guest's touching confession about family has drawn attention. In a recent broadcast on the YouTube channel Dongchimi, Lee Gyeong-je shared calm reflections on the relationship between siblings, the sacrifices involved, and his feelings toward his family.

"My sister was the navigation of my life"... A presence that filled childhood voids

Lee Gyeong-je defined his sister's presence through anecdotes from his childhood growing up as the youngest of four children (three sons and one daughter). Recalling an experience where he unintentionally ran away from home in Jeju Island as a child, he remembered that it was his sister and an acquaintance of his father who found him in the market. He noted that while he was a noticeable child because he was chubby and cherished by those who found him, he emphasized that he would be walking a completely different path in life if it had not been for his sister.

He described his sister as the "navigation of his life." During his upbringing, where the role of his mother felt somewhat lacking, his eldest sister stepped in to care for and lead him in her place. He expressed gratitude for her sacrifice, noting that among the four siblings, she prioritized caring for her younger siblings over her own life as a woman, which allowed him to grow in the right direction. He even described her as a sister to whom he must repay a lifelong debt.

While discussing sibling affection, Lee Gyeong-je expressed both guilt and gratitude toward his younger brother. He confessed that while he was making economic mistakes or incurring high expenses in the business aspect of running his oriental medical clinic, his younger brother had silently filled those financial gaps.

In particular, he revealed an anecdote where he discovered late that despite his brother's salary being 3 million won, 2 million won was being withdrawn repeatedly. To cover the brother's expenses for his older brother's business costs, such as alcohol and entertainment, the brother had been supporting him for a period of 1.5 to 2 years by reducing his own salary. Upon learning this truth belatedly, Lee said, "I am a pathetic person," and stated that he considers the debt owed to his brother a task that must be repaid after his success.

He distinguished the hardships, noting that while his wife's struggle was "mental hardship," his brother's struggle was "practical hardship" experienced directly on the front lines of life. He added that seeing his sister's sacrifice and his brother's affection makes him feel that such family members are people he must care for for a lifetime.

"Siblings become strangers? To me, it is a lifelong friendship to repay"

Lee Gyeong-je offered a different perspective on the phenomenon where siblings grow distant like strangers after marriage. He argued that while they may become strangers if they live their own lives without intervening in each other's affairs, if one side's sacrifice and consideration form the foundation, siblings can instead become "friends with true friendship."

He mentioned an anecdote from a recent visit to Chicago, where his youngest sister secretly handed him US dollars packed in a plastic bag out of concern for him. The gratitude he felt while watching his sister's back as she cautiously told him not to tell her husband symbolically demonstrates the "sibling affection" he speaks of. He explained that these actions shown by his sister and siblings are ultimately the force that binds a family together.
