World champion boxer Yoo Hee-jung and her husband revealed the contrasting paths that brought them together on JTBC’s Divorce Camp, sharing a marriage shaped by boxing, mutual support and financial setbacks.

Her husband began boxing in prison before building a championship career. Yoo Hee-jung took up the sport to relieve stress while working, eventually reaching the world stage herself. She also expressed confidence that she could knock her husband down.

The couple now run separate boxing gyms, and their two sons are also active boxers.

A boxing career that began in prison

Yoo Hee-jung’s husband said boxing gave him a direction during his imprisonment, when he devoted himself to training and developed his ambitions.

“I started boxing in prison. Honestly, if it hadn’t been for boxing there, I would have been living like a thug,” he said.

After competing in a professional rookie championship tournament, he went on to become an Oriental champion and a world champion, earning places in the rankings of the four major world boxing organizations: WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO.

Cast member Seo Jang-hoon expressed admiration for his formidable background. Seo Jang-hoon said he had told people who talked about dying if they crossed the wrong person that they should meet someone like this husband.

The husband said he now runs a boxing gym and strives to live more honestly and uprightly than anyone.

A credit card and mutual support

Yoo Hee-jung made her professional debut at 29. She became an Asian champion under WBC, WBA and WBF before advancing to become a women’s world champion.

Their relationship began with her attraction to her husband’s masculine demeanor. Before they married, she handed him a credit card and told him to “eat what you want and buy what you want,” a gesture that reflected her bold, take-charge personality.

She explained that she wanted him to be able to concentrate on his boxing career. She also credited his support with helping her reach the top of her own sport.

“I was able to become a world champion thanks to my husband’s selfless support,” Yoo Hee-jung said.

Trust brings financial trouble outside the ring

Despite the couple’s toughness and skill in boxing, their accounts of financial decisions revealed a more vulnerable side to life outside the ring. Yoo Hee-jung spoke candidly about money troubles she attributed to trusting others too readily, including a recent investment-related incident.

“I trust people too easily. If someone approaches me gently, I’m easily won over,” she said.

She described paying high prices for certain goods and losing money through investments. In another case, money she had lent was not repaid, and she ultimately had to settle the matter by accepting ownership of land.

Yoo Hee-jung said her warmhearted nature had also left her a victim of fraud. Her account showed how the trust she placed in people could unsettle her in everyday life, even after a career displaying strength in the ring.
