Kim Young-chul spoke about his compulsive tendencies and the daily routines he uses to manage them during an appearance on MBC’s Radio Star. The comedian also described a packed schedule of radio, YouTube and lecture work, and said he has learned to channel his energy into talking.

On the program, Kim delivered a rapid-fire stream of conversation, in contrast to his appearance on Knowing Bros. He said he has continued hosting Power FM for 10 years and has held the top spot on the Star Chart for nine years, describing a particular affection for radio.

“A compulsion born of wanting to do well”

Kim said he sought an ADHD assessment after worrying about his condition, to the point of hearing comments such as, “Why is it so messy?” The assessment took about two hours. He said the result was that he did not have ADHD but did have compulsive tendencies.

“I have a slight compulsion to smile when I go on stage, and above all, I definitely have a compulsion to do well,” he said. He added that when he finds a conversation boring, he changes his vocal tone, explaining that his desire to do better than others keeps him constantly active.

“Waking up early has become my special talent”

Kim shared a video on his YouTube channel showing his day beginning at 5:30 a.m. with stretching and reading while traveling. The video drew considerable interest and recorded 1.2 million views. “Waking up early has become my special talent,” he said, adding, “I’m so happy to wake up early.”

He described starting the morning by making his bed, then listening to podcasts and studying English by phone while on the move. “When I get up in the morning, make my bed and start the day, I feel as if my diligence has been proven,” he said. He added that the routine brings him happiness and that he studies meditation and Stoic philosophy to steady his mind.

“I control everything except my mouth”

Jokingly calling himself “a control god who controls everything except my mouth,” Kim said speaking is where his energy comes from. He said talking a lot can actually help resolve his insomnia and that he has learned how to regulate his energy.

Recalling an experience at an expo in the United States, Kim said he faced difficulties because of the language barrier but kept asking questions rather than backing down in an effort to resolve the situation. “When Koreans get nervous, their pronunciation can waver, but I hold on through sheer confidence,” he said, describing his personality.

Kim also shared an anecdote involving Park Mi-sun. To avoid causing stress to an acquaintance undergoing treatment, he joked, “Does your hospital room have a Marriott Hotel view?” The story showed his way of looking after people around him and his warm-hearted nature.
