Singer Eric Nam has opened up about the racial discrimination he experienced while living in the United States and addressed recent rumors regarding his retirement. In an interview released through the YouTube channel YouTube Ha Ji-young, Eric Nam shared his honest feelings, ranging from painful past memories to his current activities.
“Even having spit in my face”... Scars from racial discrimination during life in the United States
Eric Nam recalled his experiences with racial discrimination in the United States in a calm but specific manner. He stated that he faced significant racial discrimination during his school years, including physical harassment such as having spit in his face or being poked in the eyes. Although he attended a private school through the sacrifices of his parents, he felt a sense of alienation and discrimination as the only Asian student in a wealthy, white-centered environment, which left lasting scars. He recalled that despite his parents' efforts to afford his tuition, the world he lived in was vastly different from that of the other children in his environment.
Eric Nam also mentioned the invisible walls within the entertainment industry in the United States. He reported hearing that American agencies tend to perceive Asians as not being "cool" or attractive. The sense of isolation he felt as the sole Asian person in meeting settings became one of the backgrounds for his decision to challenge himself in the United States. He stated that he continues his challenges with the mindset of, "It is not something I can change alone, but if I can be of even a little help, I should try." Despite this discrimination, he maintained high academic standing while balancing cello performances and studies, and even drew school attention during his senior year of high year by performing an 'nSync' medley at a talent show.
“Retirement rumors are a misunderstanding, currently on world tour”... Unceasing challenges
He drew a firm line against the "retirement rumors" that have recently spread online. Seeing videos related to retirement appearing on social media such as Shorts, Eric Nam clearly stated, "Retirement is a misunderstanding and a misconception." He shared his current status, noting that he is continuing a world tour consisting of approximately 80 performances and is also balancing acting activities, including filming four movies.
His current activities involve moving intensely between the United States and South Korea. He is managing a schedule that involves flying to major cities such as Atlanta, New York, and LA about once a month. Eric Nam jokingly remarked, "I am performing at a deficit," implying his intense schedule where he performs multiple roles, including advertisements, events, singing, and English interpretation. In particular, he continues his activities enduring flight times of approximately 15 hours in Atlanta, 16 hours in New York, and 11 hours in LA.
Reunion with Ha Ji-young, empathy as interviewers
This interview was conducted as a reunion with reporter Ha Ji-young, with whom he had a connection during past broadcasts. The two shared the professional difficulties they face and talked about the process of doing their best in their respective positions as interviewers.
Eric Nam also mentioned episodes he experienced as an interviewee during his past activities in South Korea. He recalled experiences where it was difficult to grasp the intention of the questioner during an interview, or the tension he felt in sometimes strict atmospheres. He also shared the embarrassment and disappointment he felt when encountering a reaction where a questioner responded sternly when asked about their age during an interview.
