Singer HANRORO is preparing for her first orchestral performance, taking on a 26-song setlist for SERIES.L that spans her music from debut to the present. A newly released behind-the-scenes video captures her excitement and growing nerves as she rehearses for the stage.

In the video, HANRORO described the setlist as more demanding than she had expected. With only five speaking segments, including those in the encore, she said the extensive program required concentrated practice.

She described the performance as a reflection of her musical history, bringing together her debut years and the artist she is today.

Orchestra’s sound heightens her ambitions

At her first rehearsal with the orchestra, HANRORO encountered an unfamiliar sound that she said was “far more enchanting than I expected.” Its richness made her feel “as if I had entered the world of Ponyo,” she said, adding that simply listening lifted her mood.

HANRORO said the playing was so compelling that she struggled to concentrate on singing. Wanting to listen, she briefly stopped singing or pretended to adjust something as she immersed herself in the sound.

“The ambition I already had for the stage was heightened to the fullest,” she said, describing how the orchestra’s playing intensified her desire to perform.

Mental rehearsals and a more solemn setting

As the performance drew closer, HANRORO’s nerves increased. She said she mentally simulated the show during rehearsals to help maintain her concentration.

She described the space as the opposite of the stages she usually performed on. Seeking a calmer, more solemn atmosphere for this performance, she said she tried to adopt that mindset from the outset out of respect for the conventions of an orchestral concert.

Those preparations also prompted reflection on rehearsal etiquette. HANRORO said she had worn a hat to an earlier rehearsal and only later heard that doing so was inappropriate for an orchestra rehearsal. She said she spent a week reflecting on it and made an effort to dress more formally for the next session.

Her detailed preparations also included learning to play the triangle, an instrument she had not encountered before, as she worked to refine the performance.
