Yesung, an expert on Osaka's best eateries, reveals his firm food preferences during a sushi dinner.
Super Junior's Yesung shared his tips for finding the best restaurants in Osaka and revealed his firm distaste for uni during a sushi dinner.
Super Junior's Yesung enjoyed a sushi dinner with his team members after completing a shoot in Osaka, Japan. After finishing filming in Nara Prefecture, Yesung's team visited a sushi specialty restaurant in Osaka based on pre-researched information about local hotspots. The team members showed great enthusiasm in selecting their meals, with each person photographing and translating the menus.
Yesung, who places great importance on the atmosphere of a travel destination, shared his personal method for finding great eateries. He explained that once a destination is decided, he first looks for a neighborhood that matches the desired vibe and then searches specifically within that area. His method involves finding one highly-rated spot via Google and then exploring related establishments to find a connection. However, he noted that places recommended by Koreans often attract many Korean visitors even locally.
"I can't eat uni" — Yesung's firm dietary preferences
As the sushi was served, Yesung revealed his firm preferences during the selection process. Recalling a recent experience in Kyoto where he broke out in hives after eating sea urchin (uni), he expressed a strong aversion to it. Consequently, Yesung decided to swap menus with the writer, suggesting sweet shrimp or salmon instead of uni to stick to his dietary needs. While trying a crab paste dish, he joked that the unfamiliar texture felt "like eating mud," though he ultimately reacted that it wasn't bad.
The subtle dynamic between Yesung and assistant director Kyumin, who was dining with them, also drew attention. Despite having worked together for over five years, Yesung playfully expressed a sense of disappointment regarding Kyumin's menu choices, remarking, "I don't think you know me well enough yet." While sharing dishes during the meal, once Yesung found a menu item ordered by Kyumin to his liking, he jokingly quipped, "I just eat whatever is ordered for me."
Yesung recommends hidden gems in Osaka
After finishing the meal, Yesung recommended atmospheric bars in Osaka for their upcoming schedule. He mentioned a cafe he had wanted to visit and a unique gallery cafe that also sells vegetables. In particular, he conveyed the local unique atmosphere by introducing a cafe run by an elderly man who strictly limits photography. Yesung showed a preference for spaces where one can focus on the ambiance rather than places where the snacks are primarily skewers.
