"The Responsibility to Protect My Younger Sibling"... The 'Command Authority' of Eldest Sons Recalled from Childhood

The influence of roles assigned by parents during childhood on the behavioral patterns of eldest sons was mentioned. Appearing on the YouTube channel "So Much Experience, but No One to Talk To," Jo Hoon, Song Ha-bin, and Yoo Young-woo shared their experiences as eldest sons and talked about the authority and responsibility that naturally formed in the process of protecting their younger siblings.
"Protect Your Sibling": Parental Teachings and Command Authority
The cast members in the video recalled being assigned the role of protecting their younger siblings by their parents. One participant mentioned how parents taught younger siblings to follow their older brothers, explaining that this resulted in a kind of 'command authority' that allowed them to protect and simultaneously control their siblings from a young age. In particular, they specifically described an experience of issuing commands to stop a younger sibling from running into the road when they first started walking. This shows the process where the perception of needing to protect the sibling from danger led to commands and control.

Differences in Roles and Devotion within Sibling Relationships
A conversation regarding the division of roles between the eldest son and the second son (or younger sibling) also followed. One participant recalled an environment where, following their parents' education, they commanded their younger sibling, and it was taken for granted that the younger sibling would follow the older brother's demands without distinguishing between the younger sibling's belongings and their own. In this process, experiences were shared where the younger sibling performed devoted roles, such as preparing meals for the older brother. On the other hand, another participant mentioned that siblings maintain a 'separate combat' style of relationship where they each handle their own meals to avoid hurting each other, suggesting that sibling relationships show different patterns for each pair.
The Existence of a Younger Sibling Perceived as a Strong Competitor
An analysis of the difference in perspectives when looking at a younger sibling was also presented. One participant, speaking from the perspective of second sons, explained the structure in which they come to perceive the older brother, who is already present before their eyes from birth, as a strong competitor. The viewpoint is that by recognizing the fact that a physically larger and stronger being is beside them, they develop a competitive spirit to not lose. This is read as a point that shows the dynamics of sibling relationships from a different aspect than the responsibility of protection felt by the eldest son.
