Semiconductor bonus surge could boost GDP by up to 0.22%p

An analysis by the Bank of Korea suggests that a significant increase in semiconductor industry bonuses could drive substantial GDP growth, though the impact depends on whether income is spent on consumer goods or diverted into real estate.

A Bank of Korea analysis suggests that a fivefold increase in semiconductor bonuses in 2027 could raise the GDP by a maximum of 0.22%. While consumption in beneficiary regions like Hwaseong and Cheongju is expected to grow by 3.7% monthly in 2026, Icheon showed lower growth as residents directed funds toward Seoul metropolitan area real estate.

Attention is focused on whether the unprecedented boom in the semiconductor industry can spread warmth beyond corporate earnings to the broader economy. As corporate profits surge and bonus scales expand due to increased semiconductor demand driven by the AI craze, a new analysis has examined the path through which increased income translates into actual consumption.

According to an analysis released by the Bank of Korea, consumption in semiconductor-beneficiary regions with high proportions of industry workers, such as Icheon, Hwaseong, and Cheongju, was up to 4% higher than in other regions following bonus payments. Notably, in 2026, when the scale of bonuses is expected to increase, the monthly consumption growth in these regions is confirmed to expand to 3.7%. This represents a direct link between larger bonus scales and consumption stimulus compared to the 1.6% increase seen after bonus payments in 2025.

Beneficiary regions open wallets for high-priced discretionary goods

When additional income was generated, consumers responded most readily in high-priced discretionary sectors, including automobiles, department stores, home appliances, and furniture. Rather than a uniform increase across all daily consumption, spending tended to concentrate on relatively expensive items that could be purchased when extra funds became available.

The impact of this consumption increase on economic growth was also calculated. With the increased consumption amount from February 2025 to June 2026 estimated at approximately 1.1 trillion won, the cumulative increase is projected to reach about 1.7 trillion won by the end of the year. Based on this, the estimated GDP increase, considering annual industrial effects, is 0.01% for 2025 and 0.03% for 2026.

The ripple effect is expected to grow even larger in 2027. As the scale of semiconductor companies' bonuses is expected to expand by about five times compared to this year, the effect of boosting GDP could increase from 0.08% to a maximum of 0.22%. This analysis suggests that when converted to the 2027 economic growth rate, it could rise by 0.06% to 0.9%p.

Icheon shows relatively low consumption growth due to real estate purchases

However, a peculiar trend was found in Icheon, which has the highest semiconductor exposure in the country, where the consumption growth rate appeared relatively small compared to other beneficiary regions. The Bank of Korea pointed to increased housing-related consumption by Icheon residents as the cause. As a trend of increased purchases of housing in the Seoul metropolitan area by Icheon residents was confirmed following bonus payments, it was suggested that a portion of the additional income may have flowed into the asset market rather than into consumption.

This suggests that the ripple effect spreading to the entire economy may vary depending on whether increased income flows into actual consumption or into asset markets such as real estate.

'Employment expansion and consumption diversification' needed for virtuous consumption cycle

The Bank of Korea analyzed that three conditions must be met for the warmth of the semiconductor boom to spread widely across the economy. First, employment expansion through new hiring must accompany the wage increases of existing employees. This is because the consumption ripple effect increases when income is distributed to more households through new employment.

Second, a structure must be created where increased income flows into actual consumption rather than the asset market. Finally, the center of gravity for consumption, currently concentrated on items like automobiles and home appliances, must shift to various other products. When consumption diversifies into items that have a high effect of circulating back into domestic household income, the virtuous cycle structure connecting corporate performance to income and consumption can be strengthened.
