Samsung Electronics DS Engineer: "The Most Important Thing When Dealing with Equipment and People is 'Honesty'"

A story capturing the job site and professional convictions of a Samsung Electronics DS (Device Solutions) engineer has been released. According to a video from the Samsung Semiconductor Newsroom, engineer Jin Jeong-min, a member of the Diffusion process technology team, shared the role and work philosophy of an equipment engineer responsible for the stable operation of semiconductor equipment.
Semiconductor lines operating 24 hours a day, the 'Toolbox' is a mobile office
The diffusion process is a stage in semiconductor manufacturing where temperature and pressure are controlled to perform rearrangement to form the desired film quality. Jin compared this to "the process of putting toppings on pizza dough and rearranging it," explaining that this process operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, without interruption. The core role of an equipment engineer is to manage the equipment so that it does not stop, ensuring semiconductors can be produced smoothly.
The 'Toolbox,' an essential item for field engineers, was described as more than just a tool kit, but a tool that shows the engineer's character and expertise. Jin defined the toolbox, consisting of wrench sets, pliers, rippers, long-nose pliers, and screwdrivers, as a "mobile office that contains both technology and people." In particular, she stated that she uses the wrench set most frequently because many parts of the equipment are composed of wrench bolts.
"Just as a doctor does not leave gauze behind"... The value of 'honesty' in reducing mistakes
As they handle expensive semiconductor equipment, a high level of attention is required from engineers. Mentioning the work rules she learned from her seniors, Jin emphasized, "Just as a doctor must not leave gauze inside a patient's abdomen after surgery, one must not leave tools inside the equipment after maintaining semiconductor equipment." To prevent such mistakes, she goes through a process of checking the inside of the equipment and the toolbox once more after work.
Honesty was cited as a core value in performing her duties. Jin said, "Whether dealing with equipment or people, you must first be honest to find the right answer and solve problems." This is because communication with other departments or colleagues is essential in the process of resolving equipment issues. She stressed the importance of honest work performance to maintain trust with colleagues, saying, "If honesty regarding the equipment is lacking and suspicious actions accumulate, eventually someone else has to take over that work."
Jin, who is currently also performing Culture Agent (CA) duties, stated her future goal is "to pick up the wrench set again, run on the equipment site, and become an engineer who contributes to semiconductor production alongside juniors and is recognized professionally."
