As the global trade environment changes rapidly due to supply chain shifts and the expansion of protectionism, KOTRA is stepping in to lower the export entry barriers for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
According to a KOTRA TV video, KOTRA is pushing for the establishment of an 'AI Export Assistant' that helps companies respond quickly to complex tariff and regulatory information through AI technology. Following a pilot project conducted at the end of last year, the plan is to introduce a 'Meta Version' of the AI service with enhanced performance this year.
Shortening Export Preparation Periods and Data-Based Risk Management
Currently, for an SME to select an overseas market, confirm the HS code (item classification number), conduct tariff research, discover buyers, and hold marketing events to reach actual export, it takes anywhere from a few months to more than a year. KOTRA intends to drastically shorten this process through AI technology.
A participant in the video explained, "With just one simple question, you can easily identify which market to enter and whom to meet," adding, "Thanks to AI technology, export entry barriers will be lowered, and companies will be able to focus more on increasing the competitiveness of their products and services by utilizing the time saved." Furthermore, the policy is to increase the accuracy of information by training the AI with real-time field information and verified data collected through KOTRA's 130 global networks in 86 countries.
In particular, the role of KOTRA as a national economic security institution was emphasized amidst the rapidly changing trade environment. The intention is to perform a role that reduces corporate risk by detecting supply chain risks and having the AI deliver timely information on new regulations or tariff information introduced by various countries.
Operating 20 AI Trade Support Centers Nationwide and Providing Industry-Specific Customized Support
KOTRA is operating 20 AI Trade Support Centers to expand the export support system utilizing AI technology nationwide. Through this, the organization plans to create an environment where SMEs located in provinces can also meet overseas buyers more easily using AI.
As seen in the recent case of the South Korean cosmetics industry, it is also possible for AI to identify and support the strengths of specific industry groups. The video mentioned the case where South Korean cosmetics are gaining popularity in the Europe and United States markets based on technological prowess using natural ingredients and excellent usability. From ingredient-focused products targeting the premium market to design-focused products targeting the younger generation, it is projected that AI can contribute to export expansion if it analyzes these market characteristics and supports appropriate buyer matching.
The participant stated, "We will open an era where anyone can easily export based on KOTRA's vast verified data," and "We will become a guide that drives the exports of all SMEs."
