The new TUCSON from Hyundai Motor Company has sought significant changes by drastically altering the design, software, and the core structure of the hybrid system, even while being based on the existing platform. The video explained that while this model uses the existing platform, the changes in appearance are so large that it is a completely new full model change-level model.
'Glaeo AI' Applied to All Trims... Data Acquisition Strategy for SDV Transition
One of the major changes in the new TUCSON is the scope of application for the artificial intelligence (AI) system. According to the MOTline video, Hyundai Motor Company has decided to equip all trims with the 'Glaeo AI' system, regardless of the display size of the new TUCSON. This is a different approach from previous models that differentiated options based on display size.
Through an interview with Seo Man-gyu, the head who oversaw the TUCSON development, the video conveyed that even if the display size decreases, Glaeo AI will be included in all trims regardless of options, and it has been designed to be usable even on the small-sized displays found in the lowest Profession trim model. Behind this decision lies the SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) strategy being pursued by Hyundai Motor Company. The video pointed out that in order to develop the artificial intelligence LLM (Large Language Model) system, the acquisition of user 'data' is more important than anything else. The strategy is to advance the system based on accumulated data by allowing more users to use the AI system.
'Art of Steel' Design and the Identity of the XRT Trim
In terms of design, the new family look concept 'Art of Steel' has been applied. The video explained that when the TUCSON's design is applied to an SUV, it gives the feeling of blending well with that concept. However, an analysis also emerged that there is a visual difference between the pre-released images and the actual mass-production model. It was pointed out that while the pre-release images gave a strong impression by increasing the wheel size and having a large offset, the actual mass-production version seems to have less of that force. The explanation is that although Hyundai Motor Company pushed the wheel offset outward significantly even in the mass-production model, there is a difference from the feeling of the pre-release images.
The 'XRT' trim, which is a specialized off-road trim released together, was also mentioned. XRT is characterized by having a dedicated body kit and off-road style wheels and tires. In the video, there was a question regarding whether there are plans to grow XRT into an independent brand like the N brand, but Hyundai Motor Company replied that there are currently no plans to operate it as an independent brand and that it will be maintained as a trim to expand the customer base for each vehicle model.
Structural Innovation of the Hybrid System through the Introduction of the P1 Motor
The core change in the powertrain is the change in the layout of the hybrid system. The existing 1.6 turbo hybrid system used a 'P0 motor' connected by a belt to turn the generator using the engine's power. The video explained that the existing P0 motor was merely a slightly enlarged generator, so there were limits to precise control during the process of matching the RPM of the engine and the motor when the engine is operating.
The system applied to the new TUCSON is a structure where the P0 motor has moved to the 'P1 motor' position between the engine and the transmission. According to the explanation by Seo Man-gyu in the video, since the P1 motor is now directly attached to the engine, there is no such thing as a belt in the middle. Due to this, when additional power is needed during electric driving and the engine operates, it can create RPM at a much faster speed, immediately and accurately, to match the engine and the transmission, thereby improving driving performance compared to the previous version. This is a change to implement a higher level of power performance even in the 1.6 turbo engine class.
